История названия города Винница — палитра таинственных этимологий, где каждый слой раскрывает свои оттенки, анализируя исторические источники и лингвистические контексты. Первое упоминание города датируется 1363 годом, когда название звучало как Венича или Веница, «Западнорусская летопись» вносит даже такой вариант, как «Беница». Краеведы середины 20 века увидели происхождение названия в древнерусском «вёно», что означает «плата за невесту». Эта теория опирается на документальные свидетельства грамоты Гринькове Сокилецкому от Федора Кориятовича 1391 года, где фигурирует «книги Андриёнова и Виницицкая».
Другие исследователи выдвигают гидронимию, утверждая, что название города произошло от реки Виннички, притока Бога (Южного Буга). Критики этой версии указывают на мелкость реки, которая, вероятно, взяла название города. Самое интересное, что и то, и другое топоним и гидроним могут отражать семейно-сакральное содержание. Самые древние следы жизни на территории современной Винницы
Следы первых поселенцев определены археологами на берегу реки Вишенка, где кремневые орудия труда позднего палеолита (40-10 тыс. до н.э.) вызывают восхищение и восторг. В период энеолита (IV–III тыс. до н.э.) трипольцы, древнейшие европейские земледельцы, выбрали современные территории Винницы, оставив свои следы на холме Старого города и частных усадьбах улицы Кармелюка. Это керамика с характерными рисунками, кремневые инструменты, остатки наземных жилых построек.
Эпоха бронзы (II тыс. до н.э.) оставила свой след в районе педагогического училища, а ранний железный век (I тыс. до н.э.) ознаменовался построением первого укрепления на правом берегу Южного Буга и на левом берегу Вишенки. Наибольшими этапами становления Винницы идентифицируются небольшие мысы у больницы имени Ющенко и педагогического училища, район Сабаровского мыса, а также территория от устья Виннички до моста на Старый город.

Город Винница разделен невидимым пределом, где река Южный Буг плещется непрестанно. Старый город и Замостье, расположенные на Приднепровской и Подольской возвышенностях, полны жизненной энергией и невероятной историей.
В девятом веке эти территории были домом для племен уличей и тиверцев, а также для вхождения в Киевскую Русь. Наследие этих племен передавалось через эпохи: от Золотой Орды до Галицко-Волынского княжества. В 1362 году литовский князь Ольгерд завоевал победу над татарской армией, включив Подолье в Литовское княжество. Начав строительство городов-крепостей, Федор и Константин Кориятович в 1362 году положили первые камни будущего Винницкого замка.
Тогда литовский князь Витовт наградил князя Дмитрия Корыбута Винницой, подаренной за выдающиеся достижения. В 1363 году Кориятовичем была возведена деревянная крепость, стоявшая на холме, где река Винничка впадает в Южный Буг. Сейчас на этом месте, где раньше был замок, расположены современные дома. Имея скромные размеры, замок представлял собой прямоугольник размером в пятьдесят на семьдесят метров. Его вход выходил на подвесном мосту, а стены, упорно возведенные из сосны и дуба, свидетельствовали об утонченной работе тогдашних мастеров. В пределах крепости располагалась церковь, большой колодец, служивший источником воды, и подземный ход, обеспечивавший доступ к реке. А это на тот период было очень важно. Однако история этого замка, как и многих других, была тяжелой, ведь шла регулярная борьба за существование крепости. В средневековье город Винница переживал сплошные испытания в связи с большим количеством татарских нападений. Именно поэтому в течение периода с 1400 по 1569 годы замок был атакован 30 раз – татары не только нанесли ущерб, но и просто уничтожали, разграбили и пылали город. В 1545 году, незадолго от того, как татары вторично опустошили Винницу, секретарь короля Сигизмунда описал замок, указав на его неудовлетворительное состояние.
Не обошел подобных событий и 1558 год, когда на острове Кемпа была сооружена новая крепость. Это явилось решающим моментом для развития и восстановления города на правом берегу Южного Буга. Новая деревянная крепость была построена старостами Богушем Корецким и Валантием Калиновским. Она стала форпостом развития, но ее существование оборвалось во время следующего приступа, когда его сожгли. Замок был восстановлен, но огонь лишил город документов и прав, включая Магдебургское право, которое было восстановлено только в 1640 году. В 1598 г. Винница стала столицей Брацлавского воеводства, заменив город Брацлав. Это решение принималось из-за опасности, которую представляло расположение Брацлава близко к Запорожской Сечи. Город стал центром, что способствовало его экономическому подъему. С этого времени начато строительство костелов, иезуитов и доминиканцев, а также православного коллегиума. Винница вошла под власть России, сначала как губернский город, но позже стала уездным городком. Замок к 1796 году уже не существовал, но крепость на острове Кемпи превратилась в тюрьму. Этот период также ознаменовался перепланировкой улиц города. Винница продолжала свое развитие, исходя из своей многовековой истории и неугомонного духа выживания, а это было тогда самым важным.

В истории Украины остались этапы, когда Винница, казалось бы, сохраняла сущность и судьбу страны в размещении Директории. Период 1918-1920 годов ознаменовался тремя этапами, когда этот большой город на Подолье становился фактической столицей Украинской Народной Республики. Со 2 февраля по 6 марта 1919 года, под давлением большевистских сил, власти Директории вынуждены были покинуть Киев и установить свой центр в Виннице. Именно здесь переформатировались политические руководства, вместо Владимира Винниченко председателем стал Симон Петлюра, а гостиница «Савой» стала новым государственным центром.
В декабре 1918 года город принял Директорию во время подготовки к восстанию против гетмана Павла Скоропадского. Здесь важные решения формировали будущую судьбу Украинской Народной Республики. Второй период отметился переездом Директории с 7 мая по начало июня 1920 года, когда маршал Польши Юзеф Пилсудский посетил Украину. Тогда Винница стала свидетелем важных исторических событий, формировавших отношения между двумя государствами. Итак, фактически Винница трижды являлась столицей УНР.
